Thailand is land of Buddhist. That is a reason why there are many Buddhist temples all over this
country. And the famous oldest temple in Bangkok is Wat Saket Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan or in
short, Wat Saket. Wat Saket is a buddhist temple in Pom Prap Sattru Phai district of Bangkok,
Thailand. In this temple, there is a huge steep artificial golden hill that called Phu Khao Thong
(Golden mountain). All tourist must see the Golden Mount due to it is the temple’s most well-known
Phu Khao Thong was built on an artificial man-made hill. Phu Khao Thong is total height from
base to 63.6 meters. To get to the top of the Phu Khao Thong, you have to climb a ladder of 344 steps.
So, it is a one place to be a view point of Bangkok. We could see a Bangkok on the horizon. Moreover,
if look at the west, you can see the towers of the Temple of the Emerald Buddha including the
Democracy Monument nearby as well. If you look at the northwest, you can see the single pylon of the

Within Phu Khao Thong contains sacred relics of the Buddha which was brought from India.
Every November, there is a temple fair during “Floating Crown” or “Floating Decoration” or Loy
Krathong in Thai. Phu Khao Thong was decorated by a huge bright-red cloth in this period. This is a
symbol of the fair opening. Once big festival plus with people’s faith, it becomes a fun fair. You will
see coloured lanterns, decorative flags,fairground games and food vendors. Most Thai people will
show their respect to the sacred relics of the Buddha then all the fun of the fair.
Special information: It you have a chance to touch the feeling of holiness, you may visit this
temple during bright-red cloth ceremony. You will see the Golden Mount is wrapped with bright-red
cloth. People who believe in buddhism will hold this bright-red cloth, more than ten meters long,
together. Then, they walk around the pagoda on their right-hand side which is realised to the
Buddha’s robe wearing. (between the right side of the body and the right arm). Above all, it is a
ceremony to show their most respect to the Buddha.
Now a day, increasingly, tourists are interested heritage tourism in Thailand. If you wish to visit
there, the easiest way is driving a car along to Worachak Road. Temple parking is available. If you
want to get rid of traffic jam, you can visit there by public transportation. There are public bus No.15
from Silom and public bus No. 49 from Chinatown. Or you can take bus No. 8, 15, 37, 47, 49, 37, 49.
Both of them pass the temple. Besides public bus, you can take to a canal or river by boat. It is a
unique experience not to be forgotten. To access Wat Saket by boat, must take a canal boat on San
Saeb Canal. It will pass Sukhumvit and Petchburi Road then you get down at Panfa Leelad Pier,
Mahanak Canal. This pier is nearest temple. Or take a Chao Phraya Express Boat to Tha-Chang Pier
then catch a taxi to the temple.
This temple opens everyday. It starts from 8.30 AM – 5.30 PM. Please prepare entrance fee 10
